At Mulberry Academy London Dock, Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education is a vital part of our curriculum and school culture. PSHE equips students with the knowledge, skills and values they need to lead safe, healthy, respectful and fulfilling lives, both now and in the future.

We are committed to delivering a high-quality PSHE curriculum that reflects the diverse experiences of our students and prepares them for life in modern Britain and an increasingly interconnected world. Through PSHE, students develop the confidence, resilience and understanding needed to make informed decisions, build positive relationships and contribute meaningfully to society.

Our PSHE curriculum

Our PSHE curriculum is carefully planned and tailored to each year group, ensuring that content is age-appropriate, relevant and responsive to students’ needs. We follow a spiral curriculum model, revisiting key themes throughout students’ time at the school with increasing depth and complexity. This approach enables students to build upon prior learning, deepen their understanding over time and apply their knowledge to real-life situations as they grow and mature.

PSHE is taught weekly and is structured around the three core themes identified by the Department for Education:

Health and Wellbeing
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
Living in the Wider World, including careers, financial education and media literacy

We also respond to local, national and global events through assemblies, form time activities and themed enrichment opportunities, ensuring that learning remains relevant, engaging and empowering.

What students learn

Through PSHE, students develop the knowledge and skills to:

Build healthy, respectful and positive relationships
Understand consent, personal boundaries and online safety
Manage mental health, wellbeing and emotional resilience
Make informed choices about physical health, nutrition and substances
Navigate social media, misinformation and digital environments safely
Develop financial literacy and understand future education and career pathways
Value diversity and challenge discrimination, prejudice and bullying
Understand citizenship, democracy and participation in society
Explore ethical issues and learn how to contribute positively to their communities
Develop the confidence to make informed decisions and lead fulfilling lives

How PSHE is taught

We create a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment where students are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas and express their views with confidence and consideration for others.

PSHE is delivered through a range of experiences, including weekly PSHE lessons on a Monday morning with Form Tutors, assemblies, form time activities, enrichment days, guest speakers, workshops and community projects. Students also benefit from careers education and guidance throughout their time at the academy, including opportunities to engage with external providers, employers and higher education institutions.

Our curriculum draws upon high-quality resources and follows national best practice to ensure students receive engaging, accurate and meaningful learning experiences.

Supporting Personal Development

PSHE plays a central role in supporting students’ wider personal development. It complements our pastoral programme and helps students develop the character, confidence and social awareness needed to flourish both within school and beyond.

Through PSHE, students are encouraged to become active citizens who understand their rights and responsibilities, respect diversity and contribute positively to their communities. The programme supports our commitment to promoting wellbeing, equality, inclusion and the fundamental values of democracy, respect, tolerance, individual liberty and the rule of law.

Working in partnership with families

We recognise that PSHE is most effective when schools and families work together. Parents and carers play an important role in supporting young people’s personal development, and we are committed to working in partnership with our community to ensure that our curriculum reflects the needs and values of our students and their families.
