British Values – Mulberry Academy London Dock

At Mulberry Academy London Dock, we are committed to preparing students to be responsible, respectful and active citizens who make a positive contribution to their local community, wider British society and the global community. We promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

We recognise that these values are not only British values but are also shared global values that help people live together peacefully, respectfully and successfully in diverse societies around the world. Through our curriculum and wider school experiences, students develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to become thoughtful, informed and compassionate members of society.

The promotion of British Values is embedded throughout school life and is closely linked to our commitment to students’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development. Students learn about fairness, equality, human rights, diversity and social responsibility through lessons, assemblies, tutor time, leadership opportunities and enrichment activities.

We encourage students to use their voice, engage in debate, respect different viewpoints and understand the importance of participating positively in democratic society. Students are supported to develop confidence, resilience and independence, while learning to value and celebrate the diverse backgrounds, cultures and experiences that make up our school community.

These values are also brought to life through our enrichment experiences, educational visits, residential trips and our extensive Wonder 7 after-school programme. Opportunities such as Model United Nations, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and Debate Mate help students develop leadership skills, confidence, public speaking and teamwork, while encouraging them to engage thoughtfully with local, national and global issues.

Students also benefit from the wide range of opportunities offered through the Mulberry Schools Trust Changemaker Programmes, including Global Girl Leading, the Mulberry STEM Academy and the Mulberry Production Arts Academy. Through participation in the Mulberry Festival of Arts and the Rightful Place Arts Conference, students are encouraged to explore creativity, social justice, equality and civic responsibility.

Through these experiences, students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to make a positive contribution to their communities and gain a deeper understanding of their role in creating a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable world.
